Handy Hints to Keep Your Towels Looking Great
The team here at queenb are experts on everything linen. Over the next few weeks we are going to be writing a series of articles on how to best look after the wonderful linen you purchase from queenb.
This week we are starting with towels.
If you understand the dos and don’ts of caring for your towel co-ordinates right from the start, you will get maximum life and best value from them.
Prior to the first wash, if possible, soak your towels overnight or for at least two hours in half the usual quantity of detergent and then wash as normal. This will allow the cotton to “bloom” and ensure maximum absorbency/fluffiness.
A washing detergent that contains optical brightening agents (OBAs) will keep your quality white towels looking lovely and “white”. A lot of washing powders/liquids on the market contain OBAs which are designed to keep “whites” looking white.
Whilst this is fantastic if you are laundering white towels, you must be extra careful not to use this type of detergent on pastel colours, especially those based on yellow/orange, ie mocha, as they may fade and you will end up with all your towels being different shades.
To ensure no fading occurs and that your coloured towels remain bright and vibrant, you should use a wool wash detergent. There are several “eco” detergents on the market that are kind to coloured towels and you might like to look at using one of these. Whilst these detergents may cost a little more, this should be weighed up against the cost of ruining your towels.
Facial cleansers and creams that contain benzoyl peroxide will leave nasty blotches on your coloured towels as well. A good idea would be to purchase one of our Microfibre Facial Cloths- not only will this protect your good towels from becoming discoloured, but they are fantastic for exfoliating and smoothing your skin.
